The NCCCO Articulating Crane Operator Certification program will ensure that your operators have the knowledge and skill to safely operate articulating cranes.

The Articulating Crane Council of North America (ACCNA) and the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO), have always  recognized the importance of safe crane operations and the role of certification in ensuring that personnel have the necessary knowledge and skills to safely operate articulating cranes. To that end, the associations have worked jointly and created a certification program for the operators of truck-mounted articulating  cranes that meets proposed state and federal requirements for licensing of crane operators, including OSHA’s proposed rule on cranes and derricks (C-DAC)

Lifting Solutions is proud to have worked with other industry members of the NCCCO Task Force to help create this certification program and is looking forward to working with you to certify all of your operators. The benefits to having your operators certified are numerous and include not only a safer work environment, but also insurance and risk reduction benefits.

To be eligible for the certification, you must:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age
  2. Meet medical requirements
  3. Comply with NCCCO’s Substance Abuse Policy
  4. Pass Written Examination
  5. Pass Practical Examination(s)
  6. Comply with the Code of Ethics

The certification program consists of three parts, a Physical Evaluation, a Written Examination and an NCCCO Practical Examination.

To meet the Physical Evaluation, candidates must continue to meet the ASME B30 physical requirements which include but are not limited to:

  1. NCCCO Physical Examination Form (valid for three years)
  2. A current DOT (Department of Transportation) Medical Examiner’s Certificate (valid for two years)

Candidates will then choose from one or more Written Examinations depending on the certificate designations they seek. The designations are:

  • Articulating Boom Crane (ABC)
  • Articulating Boom Crane w/Winch (ABW)
  • Articulating Boom Loader (ABL)

The written examinations involve 50 to 75 questions, and the candidates will be given 90 minutes to complete each tests. Study guides for the examinations can be found here.

The NCCCO Practical Examination is a hands on crane operation test in which the candidate is timed performing a pick in a predetermined course.

Candidates must complete both the Written and the Practical Examinations within a 12 month period to be certified. The certification period will last 5 years and recertification must be attained within the 12 months prior to the first certifications expiration.
